Choro is the first authentic urban music style of Brazil and has existed since the late 19th century. Today it can be heard on almost every continent. Choro is a unique blend of European classical and salon music, underpinned by Afro-Brazilian rhythms. It is also a way of life. Members of different communities visit one another to take part in so-called rodas (jam sessions), fostering intense cultural and personal exchange.
The project “Chora Berlim” and the album of the same name document such an exchange: leading representatives of Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant scene make music together with chorões from Hamburg and Berlin. Most of the compositions were written by the German-Ukrainian singer and composer Rosa Morena Russa, also known as Kateryna Ostrovska. Following its release in Germany, the album received a very positive response in Europe, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. On this evening, the album’s compositions will be performed live by a five-piece, cross-border band.
