The pianist and composer Matthias Frey has developed a unique ability to communicate with other musical cultures. He plays the grand piano like a stringed instrument: plucking, bowing, and muting the strings, creating artificial harmonics, overtones, and even quarter tones. In this way, he creates an entirely new sonic universe with his instrument!
And all this without elaborate setups on the piano, but through the direct and spontaneous interplay of his hands with the strings!
You've never heard a grand piano sound like this before!
His talent shines through in all his projects (multicultural ensembles, CD productions, world music festivals, film scores)! Tours and musical projects have taken him to East and West Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and China. His chamber music compositions are a captivating blend of contemporary tonal music, jazz, folk elements, Indian ragas, oriental scales, new music, and minimalism.
The exceptional cellist Christopher Herrmann creates a wide range of musical expressions on Baroque, modern, and electric cellos. Alongside classical music and his interest in its modern interpretations, his curiosity about the music of other cultures has inspired him to develop his own unique sound and playing techniques.
His cello and violin playing moves between evoking ancient traditions and developing a completely original style. He never loses sight of the primal source of bowed sound: the human voice.
The sound and expression of the first note (like the first step on a shared journey through an unknown land) was the starting point for a creative and inspired collaborative composition process with new and unusual timbres.
Anything was possible under the open sky!
