Indian jugalbandi violin meets Berlin free jazz

Indian violinist Sumanth Manjunath and Berlin-based saxophonist Julius Gabriel engage in an extraordinary musical dialogue, combining Carnatic classical music with free improvisation and experimental soundscapes.

Their interplay combines the tradition of South Indian jugalbandi — an improvisational dialogue between equals — with elements of European avant-garde jazz and drone music.

Born in Mysuru into a family of legendary violinists, Manjunath was trained in the tradition of the Mysore Brothers and is now considered one of the most outstanding young South Indian virtuosos.

Gabriel, who is based in Berlin, works at the intersection of jazz, new music and performance, and is a member of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra and the Blue Shroud Band under Barry Guy, among others.

Together, they are exploring new forms of musical communication that transcend cultural boundaries.
