Anne-Mareike Hess
Led by the belief that relentless strength is all we need to get things done and save the world, choreographer Anne-Mareike Hess takes us on a journey to become a warrior in her new solo. In a soundscape of initially distorted and increasingly softening voices, a profoundly poetic image of human turmoil and the longing for harmony gradually unfolds along her body. A dancing body, trapped in an eternal struggle with its emotions.
WARRIOR is the first part of the trilogy “On Fighting, Dreaming, and Weaving,” in which the artist attempts to fight her way through the tangle of stereotypical notions of womanhood. The solo DREAMER (2021) and the trio WEAVER (2023) will follow.
Conceived as an act of resistance, the piece draws its energy from the choreographer's innermost being by exposing and questioning the world we live in. Through the metamorphosis of the body and the evocative power of the warrior figure, Anne-Mareike Hess celebrates femininity in conjunction with strength.
WARRIOR
Dance performance by and with Anne-Mareike Hess
My enemy is my fear
And it takes my breath away
So I call to fight with love, open up my heart
I call you to fight with love, open up your heart
DREAMER
Dance performance by Anne-Mareike Hess / utopic productions
Even in my dreams you’re watching me
All these eyes, all these eyes
I really wonder what they see
I really wonder what you see
My body knows
In the solo dance DREAMER, choreographer Anne-Mareike Hess crosses the fine line between the real and the imagined, the felt and the fantasized: The dreamer—a sensual embodiment of awakened femininity and a transparent projection surface for the audience—lures them into a surreal space with her constantly changing appearance, a space that gradually exposes patriarchal inscriptions on the female body.
DREAMER, the second part of the trilogy "On Fighting, Dreaming, and Weaving," in which the artist attempts to fight her way through the tangle of stereotypical ideas about womanhood. DREAMER is presented in a new version, embodied by the dancer Adaya Berkovich.
