A staged reading of eyewitness accounts
The central Mediterranean is one of the deadliest escape routes in the world. Every year, thousands of people die at Europe's external border while trying to reach safety. As part of the event series “Tatort Mittelmeer” (Crime Scene: Mediterranean), well-known television investigators present reports from survivors and rescuers, as well as documentaries on human rights violations and breaches of international law in the Mediterranean, in order to give a voice to the unheard and draw attention to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Mediterranean.
This year's participants include:
Meret Becker, Ulrike Folkerts, Nina Kunzendorf, Peter Kurth, Eva Löbau, Heike Makatsch, Bjarne Mädel, Hans-Jochen Wagner, and Mark Waschke. The reading will be accompanied musically by Palestinian-Syrian artist Aeham Ahmad, who became known in 2015 as the “pianist from the rubble.”
The proceeds from the event series will go toward the purchase and conversion of the second rescue ship of the civilian sea rescue organization SOS Humanity, “Humanity 2.”
The Tatort Mittelmeer reading series aims above all to amplify the voices of those whom hardly anyone hears: people fleeing their homes.
The central Mediterranean is one of the deadliest escape routes in the world. Every year, thousands of people die at Europe's external border while trying to reach safety. In the spirit of sealing off Europe, the EU and its member states are knowingly abandoning those seeking protection.
The number of violations of the law and human rights is increasing; in ten years, almost 30,000 people have drowned: The Mediterranean is not only a crime scene, but also a mass grave. Tatort Mittelmeer (Crime Scene Mediterranean) is a staged reading that is performed annually at different theaters. To mark its tenth anniversary, the Berlin-based sea rescue organization SOS Humanity is bringing the event back to the city where it was founded.
SOS Humanity is committed to a world in which the human rights of all are protected. SOS Humanity stands for humanity at sea and on land. Since 2015, the association has been committed to ensuring that no one has to drown while fleeing their home country and that everyone is treated with dignity.
- Tatort Mittelmeer is an event organized by the civilian sea rescue organization SOS Humanity in collaboration with the Deutsches Theater Berlin.
