Satirical Reading
In his second novel, comedian and author Thomas Nicolai presents a mini-version of the GDR in fast-forward. In 2016, Dortmund couple Beate and Peter Sendler move to the small Saxon village of Maulberg, where they experience not only peaceful rural life, but also the deep nostalgia many locals feel for the “good old” East Germany.
That the idea comes from newcomer Peter Sendler is difficult for the Maulberg residents to accept—but it’s simply too tempting: to celebrate the village’s 400th anniversary, they decide to recreate the GDR for four weeks—with all the trimmings. But the experiment soon spirals out of control, because once the Maulbergers get going, neither ox nor donkey can stop them.
A satirical farce that sharply criticizes unreflective East German nostalgia—more relevant today than ever. Thomas Nicolai presents his novel with infectious humor, sharp timing, and a gift for parody. It’s no coincidence that the audiobook version of Maulberg, narrated by Nicolai himself, made it onto the hr2 Audiobook Best List.
