Genre painting of the 17th century

During the "Golden Age," genre painting established itself as a new genre in European painting, roughly at the same time as landscapes and still lifes. Famous Dutch artists such as Jan Vermeer and Jan Steen, as well as Flemish artists such as Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger, in particular, enjoyed "spying" their compatriots in their everyday lives, whether at work, in the marketplace, or in a bar. This time, they did so with a moral and didactic approach, and sometimes with a healthy dose of humor!
