Reading and discussion with Denise Buser and Volker Kaminski

No need to start all over again; walking will do just fine. As we age, people embark on a journey whose destination is clear, but not the path they take. But why make it a major retirement project and then struggle again? Nothing stops them from sleeping in first and then thinking about it.

In her wonderful essay, Denise Buser presents an unconventional itinerary – clever, light-hearted, and inspiring. How are old age and the associated vulnerability portrayed in art? What does this mean for one's own aging? What significance does passion and commitment have in old age? How and where do we find comfort and hope? Is sex still an issue in old age? Yes, we're getting older. Chill out!

Denise Buser, born in 1959, is an author and lawyer and has held various positions as a university lecturer and criminal judge. In 2006, she was awarded the Science Prize of the City of Basel. In addition to academic texts and cultural reports, she publishes fiction and poetry. She lives in Basel, occasionally in Berlin and Tangier, Morocco. "Die Altenboomer" is her second book with the publisher, following "Poetry Against Forgetting – Poets from Two Millennia" (2023).

Volker Kaminski is a freelance writer and journalist in Berlin, has published numerous novels and short stories, most recently the apocalyptic novella "Die letzte Prüfung" (The Last Exam) (2024) and "Schönes leben" (Beautiful Living) (2025). Since 2014, she has been a lecturer for Creative Writing/Novel Workshop at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.
