Picture book cinema for children aged 7 and above

Kaléko's literary journey began in Berlin in the 1920s and was marked by exile and the struggle for language and belonging. The picture book cinema invites children, families, and school classes to discover the world of the poet.

The event sensitizes young listeners to language, biography, and social issues such as exile, freedom, and responsibility—while also providing age-appropriate access to Mascha Kaléko's work.

The first part of the event features a reading from the picture book Maschas leuchtende Jahre (Mascha's Glowing Years), written by Veronika Wiggert and sensitively illustrated by artist Marie Geissler.

This will be followed by Mascha Kaléko's poetic fairy tale “Der König und die Nachtigall” (The King and the Nightingale) – a symbolic tale about freedom, the value of self-determination, and the limits of power. Mascha Kaléko (1907–1975) emigrated to the USA in 1938 and moved from there to Israel in 1959. Mascha Kaléko ranks alongside Sarah Kirsch, Hilde Domin, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, Nelly Sachs, and Else Lasker-Schüler as one of the most important German-language poets of the 20th century.

Christiane Munsberg, curator of the literature program of the Jewish Culture Days Berlin, will read from the work.
