with Prof. Hanns-Fred Rathenow and Prof. Martin Wiebel
From a helicopter perspective, Wedding in the 1960s unfolds on the screen: residential areas, industrial plants, green spaces, the Berlin Wall and the town hall appear like a vivid panorama of a district on the move.
Scenes of everyday life, people, streets and squares convey the atmosphere of a city a few years after the Wall was built and bring the past to life in a special way.
On November 13, 2025, 6 pm, the Mitte Museum will be showing the documentary film "Wedding heute" (1966), which was made between June 1965 and June 1966 by the student film group of the Frithjof-Nansen-Oberschule on behalf of the Wedding district office.
The film was shot under the direction of Hans-Lutz Becker, financed by the district council with 9,000 DM. The sound recordings were made in the studio of the Landesbildstelle and include music from two bands, the accompanying commentary, sounds from the archive and contributions from the school choir.
The Mitte Museum is currently showing the only available copy of the film.
After an introduction by Prof. Hanns-Fred Rathenow, who will explain the production process, and Prof. Martin Wiebel, who will present the cinematic features of the film, participants will be able to bring their own photos from the time and reflect on their impressions, memories and emotions in a discussion.
The event will be supplemented by reports from contemporary witnesses from the school environment. Film footage, historical photos and personal memories together convey a vivid picture of the Wedding district in the mid-1960s.
