Lecture series on the art history of the Tiergarten district
Erna Arnhold (1881-1965), a niece of art patron Eduard Arnhold, had an apartment with her husband at Matthäikirchstraße 12 from 1902 to 1932 and was well connected in the art scene of the Tiergarten district.
However, she was often not to be found at home: Before and after the First World War, she traveled all over the world. She documented her travels in photographs, newspaper articles, non-fiction books and radio talks; she also built up a collection of East Asian artifacts.
Her second great passion was the history of 'Old Berlin', which she communicated in radio broadcasts and in a major book on "Goethe's Berlin Relations" (1925). in 1939, she fled Nazi Germany for exile in California; she returned to West Berlin in the 1950s.
Erna Arnhold was a pioneer in many fields. The lecture will paint a vivid picture of her life and work.
