A stroll through Prenzlauer Berg

Reunification also left its mark on the people of Prenzlauer Berg: Until 1989, Oderberger Straße, now a tourist attraction, was a dead-end street ending at the Wall, a large portion of the neighborhood's old buildings fell into disrepair, and today's U2 subway line only ran as far as Thälmannplatz.

Many traces of the GDR era can still be traced today, but significant changes have also taken place. Streets and subway stations now bear different names.

The Kulturbrauerei demonstrates how vacant buildings enable the use of cultural open spaces. Kollwitzplatz is the center of a hip, gentrified neighborhood that bears little resemblance to the crumbling old buildings and East Berlin's bohemian scene of the 1980s.
