by Marc Lippuner
Between 1871 and 1994, Paragraph 175 made sexual acts between men a criminal offence; society did the rest to disapprove of same-sex relationships of any kind as shameful, immoral or sick.
Despite this, Berlin developed into a melting pot and place of longing for homosexual life: scandalous and scientifically researched in the Wilhelmine Empire, depraved and debauched during the Weimar Republic, mercilessly persecuted under National Socialism, secretive in the east of the divided city, activist and loud in walled West Berlin.
With texts and songs, the singer and actress Sigrid Grajek and Marc Lippuner, editor of the anthology "ELDORADO Berlin", trace the eventful history of the "other" Berlin.
