Nature's self-healing powers in the seeds of old oaks

As a result of climate change, more and more trees in the park are dying and prematurely disappearing from the park landscape. Of the 26,000 trees in Sanssouci Park, many are in a bad way.

The spring of 2025 was the driest since 1880. All these circumstances can be seen in the trees.

This is a huge problem for the SPSG gardens, and answers need to be found.

One approach is to plant other, climate-tolerant tree species from the Mediterranean region, another is to promote and propagate vital trees from the park. For some years now, collecting acorns in the park has been a method of specifically selecting epigenetic characteristics from the oaks planted in the park.

The aim is to grow offspring from the most vital trees in the Sanssouci tree nursery and then replant them in the park to preserve the park's appearance.

During the work assignment, knowledge about the trees is imparted and the valuable seeds are collected, which are to be sown in the nursery in the fall.
