French Swing Jazz

An irresistible repertoire from the heyday of French swing jazz, swinging music from the 1930s to the 1950s with a fresh twist, from the Riviera to the Rive Gauche

German-French jazz singer Susanna Bartilla and jazz violinist Hanna Bienert celebrate great French artists with jazzy arrangements.

Susanna and Lockwood student Hanna met 15 years ago in the Latin Quarter in Paris and soon realised that they had a lot in common, including their home city of Berlin. The many years spent in France left a deep mark on both musicians and provided them with cultural impressions that they now present to German audiences as Bons Baisers de Paris (greetings from Paris), accompanied by the well-known Berlin musicians Romani Weiss on guitar and André Loos on double bass.

Their irresistible repertoire celebrates the great French singers and composers, from Charles Trénet and Yves Montand to Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, giving the timeless melodies from the heyday of French swing a rejuvenating makeover and a fresh kick that allows them to truly shine in a new light.

In a modern guise, free of kitsch and without any accordion, these swinging chansons shine like freshly cut diamonds, as seductive as a barefoot Bardot in a striped shirt on the beach at Saint Tropez, as relaxed as Maurice Chevalier in a straw hat, as mysterious as Juliette Gréco in an existentialist Paris jazz cellar.

From the Riviera to the Rive Gauche, the programme is full of joie de vivre and a little bit of melancholy, conjuring up an atmosphere that simply makes you happy.
