A very special event in the Grundton D benefit concert series, organized by Deutschlandfunk (DLF) in cooperation with the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD), awaits music lovers on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin.

The vocal ensemble Apollo 5 will perform their program "Music that Touches the Soul." It is stylistically and geographically expansive, with strong references to Scotland and Ireland, but also makes excursions to Renaissance Italy, Victorian England, and contemporary North America. The music is a homage to the rich bardic tradition, inspired by human emotions, landscape, and cultural heritage.

The Grundton D benefit concerts, organized by Deutschlandfunk (DLF) since 1991 in cooperation with the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD), inspire audiences at the music events in person, and then listeners in front of their radio sets around the world, precisely through the combination of music and architecture.

For the private German Foundation for Monument Protection, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the DLF concerts are an excellent opportunity to bring both well-known and lesser-known architectural monuments into the spotlight – as a kind of public support and invaluable help for local monument preservationists in their daily efforts to gain understanding, support, and funding. Thus, the musical events contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage for both the listeners on site and those in front of their receivers. "D" stands for monuments in need and also for Germany as a whole. To date, over 300 unusual concert venues have attracted music-loving visitors.

The proceeds from the benefit concert in Berlin will benefit the building in which they take place. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is not only a landmark of Berlin, the ruined tower is a memorial against all war. The blue tower, in particular, should promote a world at peace. For French glass designer Gabriel Loire and architect Egon Eiermann, the blue of the windows represents peace, and the traces of color represent joy.

Kaiser Wilhelm II commissioned the construction of the Memorial Church in memory of his grandfather of the same name. The Memorial Church's ensemble of buildings, with its interplay of successor structures and the preserved tower ruins, is a distinctive urban landmark and a symbol of West Berlin's will to live and rebuild after 1945. Strong reactions, especially from the population, prevented the demolition of the tower ruins in the 1950s and led to the old and new buildings being allowed to coexist, and the old tower being preserved as a memorial against the war.
