Works by Josef Haydn, Aaron Copland, Leonard Enns on the theme of water

In his cantata "This Thirsty Land," Canadian Leonard Enns addresses both the life-giving importance of water for our planet and the dangers posed by water pollution. The work is expected to be heard in Germany for the first time.

In the first part of Haydn's Creation, the image of a paradisiacal, ordered nature unfolds as a mirror of divine glory. In conjunction with the contemporary critical texts of Enns's cantata, Haydn's otherwise affirmative music takes on a new, refracted dimension: The "idea of chaos" can be experienced as a frighteningly contemporary relapse into disorder; the radiant C major of the divine "light" may evoke associations with a destructive atomic flash; and the jubilant chorus "In all the world goes forth the word" becomes a haunting warning.

Aaron Copland's large-scale a cappella work "In the Beginning" also tells the biblical creation story as a powerful parable. When the music culminates in an overwhelming crescendo reaching a fourfold fortissimo—with the creation of mankind as the pinnacle of creation—it sounds not only hymnic, but also like a call for responsibility and preservation.
