The working method of Peter Paul Rubens

The Gemäldegalerie preserves one of several sketches Rubens made around 1628 in preparation for a large altarpiece for the Augustinian Church in Antwerp.

Recent research results and an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scan, conducted in cooperation with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) and the University of Antwerp, provide new insights into the artist's working methods and the development of his large-scale pictorial concept. Sandra Stelzig, conservator at the Gemäldegalerie, will explain the research results, the examination methods, and the background to the painting's creation.
