Discussion, 35 years East Side Gallery

To mark the 35th anniversary of the East Side Gallery on September 28, 2025, the Berlin Wall Foundation and the German Foundation for Monument Protection will discuss the preservation of the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall and the famous Wall paintings at the event "35 Years of the East Side Gallery - Challenging Preservation, Controversial Interests and Sustainable Strategies".

Appropriate approaches have been discussed, argued and fought over in recent years. Many works of art have been renewed, while the historical substance is dwindling and the conflict between art and monument values, tourist use and preservation is becoming ever more apparent. To date, the monument has been repainted, restored and partially renovated several times. This raises many questions, which will be addressed in a panel discussion at the event.
