Right-wing extremism among young people
Right-wing extremist positions are becoming increasingly widespread, especially among young people. A shaved head, bomber jackets, and combat boots seem to be becoming "cool" again – even well into the mainstream of society. Right-wing content spreads quickly and widely on social media.
But actors in the scene are also increasingly active in schools and sports across Germany. The increasing popularity of their content among young people is demonstrated by recent election results, as is an increase in politically motivated violence.
The recent arrests of the suspected right-wing terrorists of the "Last Wave of Defense," aged just 14 to 21, demonstrate the extent of this development. The boundaries between digital hate and real-life attacks are fluid. Researchers and experts are observing that a new right-wing extremist generation is increasingly organizing and radicalizing online and on the streets. They speak of an unprecedented dimension of propaganda, networking, and violence directed against refugees, alternative, and queer people.
Against this backdrop, in their latest project, "Radical Young," Polyformers explores the mechanisms behind this shift to the right among the younger generation using current examples. They demonstrate how the gradual radicalization of young people is taking place and which narratives play a role in this.
- Which actors are present with which content and activities?
- To what extent are right-wing positions already normalized among young people, and what are the reasons for this?
- What prompts them to join the far-right extremist spectrum?
- What fears and hopes play a role in this?
- And how do politics, society, schools, and families react to this?
The play is based on intensive research and was supervised by right-wing extremism expert Andreas Speit.
Five young people, along with three actors, take to the stage to share their personal experiences and perspectives on the topic. At various stations, they combine informative moments with playful and immersive scenes. In this way, they bridge the gap between external and internal perspectives and create both content-based and emotional access. They take the audience on a journey into the world of a new right-wing extremist generation.
