Grundton D charity concert at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin
A very special event in the Grundton D charity concert series organized by Deutschlandfunk (DLF) in collaboration with the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) awaits music lovers on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin.
The vocal ensemble Apollo 5 will perform their program “Anam – Music that touches the soul.” It is stylistically and geographically wide-ranging, with strong references to Scotland and Ireland, but also takes excursions to Renaissance Italy, Victorian England, and present-day North America. The music is a tribute to the rich bardic tradition, inspired by human emotions, the landscape, and cultural heritage.
The Grundton D charity concerts, which Deutschlandfunk (DLF) has been organizing since 1991 in cooperation with the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD), inspire visitors to the music events on site and then listeners around the world through the combination of music and architecture. DLF will broadcast the charity concert in Berlin again as part of its Konzertdokument der Woche program on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at 9:05 p.m., with a report on the venue.
For the private German Foundation for Monument Protection, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the DLF concerts are an excellent opportunity to draw attention to well-known and unknown architectural monuments – in a sense as public support and invaluable assistance for local monument conservators in their daily efforts to gain understanding, support, and funding. In this way, the music events contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage for listeners on site and in front of their radios. Because “D” stands for monuments in need of preservation and at the same time for Germany-wide. So far, over 300 unusual concert venues have attracted music-loving visitors.
The proceeds from the benefit concert in Berlin will go toward the building where it is held.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is not only a Berlin landmark, the ruined tower is also a memorial against all war. The blue tower in particular was intended to promote a world of peace. For French glass designer Gabriel Loire and architect Egon Eiermann, the blue of the windows stands for peace and the traces of color for joy. The construction of the Memorial Church was initiated by Kaiser Wilhelm II in memory of his grandfather of the same name.
The building ensemble of the Memorial Church, with its combination of successor buildings and preserved tower ruins, is an unmistakable urban landmark and a symbol of West Berlin's will to live and rebuild after 1945. Strong reactions, especially from the population, prevented the demolition of the tower ruins in the 1950s and led to the old and new being allowed to coexist and the old tower being preserved as a memorial against war.
Tickets are available online at ztix.de for €30 or at the box office for €35. Ticket hotline: 06151-629461-0.
