The Misanthrope is perhaps Molière's most autobiographical play. Arriving at the court of Louis XIV, lucid and seductive, and succumbing to a woman 21 years his junior, Molière knew that nothing is funnier than man in the whirl of his weaknesses. The famous comedian saw through the mechanisms of the court and its hierarchies.
