Hardly any other rap crew had such a lasting impact on the 90s as The Pharcyde – with their original flow, creative beats, and a lightness of touch that still sets standards today. Their milestone album "Labcabincalifornia" was released in 1995 and is considered one of the most important works of West Coast rap.
To mark the 30th anniversary of this classic, The Pharcyde will be coming to Berlin in October for an exclusive show – bringing their inimitable vibes back to the stage.
Founded in Los Angeles, the crew caused a sensation with their debut album "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" (1992). With introspective lyrics, ironic wit, and jazzy beats, they created a style-defining alternative to the then-dominant gangsta rap. The song "Passin' Me By" became a cult track and symbol of the Golden Era.
Another highlight followed in 1995 with "Labcabincalifornia." Produced by J Dilla, known for his unique, soulful sound, the album features hits like "Runnin'" and "Drop." The latter was memorably showcased in a legendary music video by Spike Jonze.
To this day, "Labcabincalifornia" continues to inspire artists worldwide—a true piece of hip-hop history that is now being celebrated live.
