(Almost) hot off the press – New publications in 1925
The rise and fall of Joseph Süß Oppenheimer (1689–1738) provided Lion Feuchtwanger with the material for his novel, which became one of the most successful international bestsellers of the 1920s and, a decade later, saved the author's life.
Jud Süß shows how Feuchtwanger's lifelong themes – Jewish identity, ambition and the struggle for an authentic self, sexuality and politics – crystallised for the first time in novel form.
