From 26 July 2025, the CAMERA WORK gallery will present Inner Light, the first solo exhibition in Germany by internationally renowned artist Chris Levine.
Levine is one of the outstanding representatives of contemporary light art and combines state-of-the-art technologies with a contemplative artistic approach in his interdisciplinary work.
The exhibition features over 30 of Chris Levine's characteristic portrait photographs, which he presents as classic photographs, in lightboxes and as lenticular works, including numerous new works by the artist that are being shown in an exhibition for the first time worldwide. At the heart of Chris Levine's art is light – as an ethereal and spiritual element and as a means of expanding perception. Levine uses 3D imaging and laser installations to create immersive experiences that go beyond the purely visual. His works contain a meditative depth and refer to an inner dimension of being. This approach is particularly impressive in his characteristic lenticular works, which reveal the inner light of the subjects portrayed. One of the central works in the exhibition is the much-discussed Lightness of Being – part of a multi-part portrait cycle of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been recognised by the National Portrait Gallery as one of the most impressive royal portraits of our time. This work is complemented by a nine-part tableau showing the monarch from different perspectives – a meditative sequence of images with particular visual and symbolic power. In addition to the Queen, the exhibition also focuses on other personalities of contemporary culture. On display are two works from the She's Light series featuring Kate Moss, a triptych by British designer Sir Paul Smith, and the world's only portrait of street artist Banksy.
Another highlight is Levine's Compassion series, which was inspired by his encounter with the Dalai Lama. Levine is – alongside Annie Leibovitz – the only artist who has been permitted to portray the spiritual leader of Tibet in an artistically conceived series of portraits. Chris Levine (born 1960) is a British contemporary artist known for his groundbreaking work with light and lasers. His innovative approach goes beyond traditional media, integrating technology and spirituality to create site-specific and monumental art installations that challenge and expand human perception. Levine's multidisciplinary practice encompasses installation, photography, performance, fashion, music and design.
