The Konzerthausorchester Berlin and Chief Conductor Joana Mallwitz open the new season with Maurice Ravel's hypnotically soaring "Boléro" – a powerful opening.
Alice Sara Ott takes the stage with the piano concerto that follows, composed especially for her by Bryce Dessner – and with her another key figure of the season: the internationally acclaimed pianist from Munich with Japanese roots is the new Artist in Residence, while Dessner, the American composer living in France, will shape the Konzerthaus as Composer in Residence for the 2025/26 season.
Joana Mallwitz describes Dessner's music as "immediate and physical – highly complex and technically challenging, yet never abstract. It is a thrilling, vivid experience. The intense wrestling with the musical material creates an energy that I otherwise only know from Beethoven – an energy that is immediately transmitted to the audience and the musicians. It is simply tremendous fun to play his works."
With precisely this Beethovenian energy, the orchestra and conductor bid farewell to the summer night: After Anna Meredith's "Nautilus," Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 will be heard – the prelude to a major symphonic cycle with which Joana Mallwitz and the Konzerthausorchester will celebrate the Beethoven Year 2027. Also planned are her popular "Expedition Concerts" for each of the nine symphonies.
