Johannes Brahms struggled for a long time with his First Symphony – only to then present a work that established him as the leading symphonist of his era. Dark, tense, yet full of intimacy, his First Symphony is considered the epitome of the late Romantic symphony.
Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic will open the 2025/26 season with it. Robert Schumann's passionate and dramatic Manfred Overture kicks things off. Bernd Alois Zimmermann's oboe concerto provides a tonal counterpoint, with Albrecht Mayer, principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic, performing the solo part.
