The artwork The Face and Its Contents (2025) by Hande Sever explores the connection between the sculptor Georg Kolbe and the history of the Armenian Genocide in the early 20th century.
During World War I, Georg Kolbe was transferred to Istanbul in 1917, where he created busts of various prominent figures. Among those portrayed were the so-called „Three Pashas,“ who went down in history as the main perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide in 1915. Today, only a photograph of the portrait of Talât Pasha has survived. Hande Sever’s artistic research uncovers stories, connections, and historical contexts within Kolbe’s body of work.
Prof. h.c. Dr phil. Tessa Hofmann has a doctorate in Slavic studies and sociology and subsequently worked as a research assistant at the Institute for East European Studies at the Free University. She has been working as an academic author since 1979 and has published numerous books, book contributions and articles on the history and current situation of Armenia and its diaspora. One focus of her work in genocide research is on the Ottoman genocide of three million indigenous Christians (Armenians, Syro-Aramaeans and Greeks).
