Book presentation with music With Klaus Farin, Andreas Brenne and Johannes Zeilinger

The authors Klaus Farin (ed . ), Andreas Brenne and Johannes Zeilinger present the book "Winnetou. Karl May in critical times". The evening will be accompanied by music from guitarist Holger Saarmann.

Karl May (1842-1912) is one of the most widely read German-language authors - the total circulation of his books is estimated at over 200 million copies. His stories and their unique reception history are a testimony to the power of literature to overcome cultural barriers and convey universal values. Karl May once stood for freedom, pacifism and anti-colonialism. May inspired admiration and respect for the indigenous peoples and cultures of North America in millions of young readers. Winnetou, the noble chief of the Apaches, is one of the most positive figures in world literature. And today the same Winnetou is supposed to symbolize the glorification of colonialist foreign domination and identity theft?

This volume examines Karl May's literary work and its significance from the perspective of cultural appropriation, emigration and European colonialism.

With contributions by Andreas Brenne, Christian Feest, Gunnar Sperveslage and Johannes Zeilinger on the "Indian" image and colonial thinking in Karl May's "Orient Cycle".
