Classical, musical & swing over 100 years of music for Berlin
In keeping with Ascension Day and Father's Day, the BVG Orchestra has put together an atmospheric programme under the artistic direction of Yukari Ishimoto.
Look forward to a unique concert of light music from around the world!
From sensual melodies to pop rhythms, there is something for every taste. Classics by Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and co. provide nostalgic moments, while rousing titles are guaranteed to put you in a good mood.
The BVG orchestra is older than the BVG itself. A smaller music group, consisting of tram employees, has existed since 1890.
The orchestra was actually founded in 1902, the same year in which Berlin's first underground railway line was opened. It all began with a concert in front of the management of the Great Berlin Tramway, which was met with such great enthusiasm that the management gave the order to form an orchestra worth listening to as soon as possible.
Renowned conductors were subsequently contracted, under whose direction the orchestra reached a remarkable level over the following decades.
After the Second World War, due to the division of the city, an orchestra only existed at the BVG in West Berlin. After reunification, however, the first musicians from the eastern part of the city and from the state of Brandenburg joined the orchestra in 1990.
The musicians now come from Bulgaria, England, France, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Slovakia, and all of them are committed to their great skills. Since 2013, the BVG Orchestra has been conducted by Yukari Ichimoto Let yourself be enchanted by the 36 musicians and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
