Zoltán Kodály drew inspiration for his ‘Dances of Galánta’ from childhood memories of the music of the Sinti and Roma in his native Hungary. Melanie Bonis, on the other hand, gives French lightness and elegance a melodious expression in her Suite en forme de valses.

This dance-like elegance is contrasted by the suspenseful music of Paul Dukas: with his famous ‘Sorcerer's Apprentice’, he created a powerful setting for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's ballad of the same name.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' “Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1” is based on folk songs he once collected in a fishing village in the English county of Norfolk – a piece full of rural atmosphere and folkloric charm.

The programme concludes with George Gershwin's rarely performed Piano Concerto in F – a work full of poetry, rousing rhythms and sparkling wit.
