Die Berliner Gipsformerei (Replica Workshop)

Manufactory and museum collection

The Gipsformerei of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is both a manufactory and a museum collection, the largest institution of its kind in the world. For more than 200 years, high-quality art replicas have been created here from historical moulds using traditional craftsmanship.

Ancient heroes in battle. Graceful princesses taking a stroll. Poets and thinkers immortalised in busts. And sometimes just a body part. Impressions from the workshop of the Berliner Gipsformerei. For more than 200 years, artful replicas of important original works have been created here by hand using traditional methods. Based on an extensive collection of historical moulds, more than 7,000 art reproductions can be produced - from almost all eras and cultural regions. The spectrum ranges from antiquity to modernity and includes works from Europe, Africa, Asia and Central and South America.

Many of the moulds and models used are up to 180 years old. They not only document the shape of the original work of art, but also preserve its material condition at the time of moulding. In many cases, the originals are now lost or only fragments remain - but their original appearance lives on in the moulds. The Gipsformerei's mould collection thus enables the reconstruction and passing on of a unique cultural heritage.

Products of craftsmanship excellence

The Gipsformerei occupies an outstanding position: Its collection not only serves to preserve cultural and historical treasures, but also makes them available as an active working tool in daily production. Every reproduction that is created here - be it the famous image of Nefertiti or the monumental Pergamon Frieze - is not only a masterpiece of craftsmanship, but also a living part of cultural heritage and memory.
