International Day for Biological Diversity
Every day, about 150 species of animals and plants go extinct. Many will be gone before we even have the chance to know them.
In order for more people to learn to recognize, appreciate, and protect the biodiversity of our world, the Botanical Garden Berlin (BO Berlin) offers a special program on the International Day for Biological Diversity: "Yoga for Biodiversity," a botanical Science Slam with a quiz for the audience, and free admission to the garden and greenhouses with extended opening hours. You are warmly invited to the Day for Green Diversity in Germany's most diverse botanical garden, home to around 20,000 species!
Yoga for Biodiversity 2025: On the mat for nature!
"Lotus seat", "Frog" or "Bamboo". Many yoga poses are inspired by nature. Whether upside down in the "Downward Dog" or as a "Tree" gazing at the sky – the open-air yoga session in the Botanical Garden invites you to discover biodiversity from an unusual perspective while learning more about endangered animal and plant species. It is part of the nationwide charity campaign of the conservation organization WWF Germany and collects donations for species protection. The yoga session takes place from 5 to 6 PM on the lawn area between the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden in Berlin. The program is conducted by the yoga experts from the university sports team of Freie Universität Berlin (FU). Those who want to participate should bring comfortable (sports) clothing and a yoga mat or blanket; registration is not required.
Science Slam meets Botany – Science to Think
AboutFascinating facts, clever deceptions, and surprising Aha moments from the wondrous world of green biodiversity will be presented afterward at a botanical Science Slam at the Great Tropical House: Lichen researcher Dr. Robert Lücking, conservation geneticist Dr. Katja Reichel (both from BO Berlin), and biodiversity manager Rebecca Rongstock (FU Berlin) will share their scientific findings and latest insights. What sounds like science fiction is sometimes bitter reality. And vice versa. Real or fake? The audience is invited to participate – live from 7 PM to 8:30 PM at the moderated science quiz about plants, fungi, and algae. With this format, the Botanical Garden aims to make biodiversity research tangible – in an entertaining, comprehensible, and dialogue-oriented way.
