The Plattenbau was initially at the heart of social policy in the GDR, a space for socialization and a symbol of real socialist progress—up until 1989. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it became a site of painful transformations, symbolizing social decline and racist violence. The buildings, left as ruins, awaited demolition, renovation, or repurposing.

How are East German Plattenbau housing estates represented in art?

This question is explored in the group exhibition Wohnkomplex: Art and Life in the Plattenbau, curated by Kito Nedo, at MINSK starting in the fall of 2025.

The show will feature installations, paintings, drawings, photographs, and films created from the 1970s to the present. The Plattenbau has never become a monument, but remains a living reality—a site of GDR memory where life continues.
