He was one of the most prominent conductors of all time, leaving a lasting mark on the history of operatic interpretation. Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954) was also associated with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden for several decades, albeit not continuously.

Between 1920 and 1922, Wilhelm Furtwängler conducted the symphony concerts of the Staatskapelle Berlin. In 1933, he was appointed opera director, with extensive responsibility for both musical and administrative matters. Even after his retirement from this position in 1934, he continued to conduct operas and concert performances, both during and after the Second World War.

Wilhelm Furtwängler's connections with this opera house—including their historical context—will be explored during a matinee in the Apollosaal. Chamber music by Furtwängler himself, who always considered himself a composer alongside his conducting career, will be performed.
