For thousands of years, humanity believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe. Since the first time we looked through a telescope, the perspective has changed radically. Today we know that the Sun is just an ordinary star among hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way.

Increasingly powerful telescopes and space probes have shown that the solar system is just one of countless planetary systems in the galaxy.

What is necessary for life to emerge on these worlds and what might it look like? Since the dawn of humanity, the question has plagued them: Are humans alone in space?
