Wendy Chun (Keynote)
What role does technology play in the resurgence of global fascism? On many levels, the entanglement of technology and tech companies—and those who have profited from or inspired them—in these political developments appears to play a central role.
From social media algorithms designed to generate agitated clusters of gratifying rage to dreams of replacing virtually all the workforce with AI; from dark enlightenment 'gurus' discussing how best to dispose of the undesirable 99% to open calls for the destruction of democratic systems.
Unlike before, however, this time the focus seems not to be on building mass movements, but rather on evasion. The goal is to break away and escape from a dying planet in the name of freedom.
The lecture will explore the diverse connections between technology and global fascism, specifically analyzing how current machine learning algorithms 'train' their users and shape the world. The question is: To what extent do existing technological systems and logics drive global fascism?
