Symphony Concert: Yamada & Queyras

In just six minutes, the full energy of a great symphonic work unfolds: Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture bursts onto the scene with thunderous percussion, rapid-fire lines, and fiery bursts of energy, finds a moment of calm in the Andante, and culminates in a triumphant finale. Composed in 1943 during the occupation of Warsaw, the work could not be premiered until 1945 in Kraków, after the war had ended.

Henri Dutilleux’s Cello Concerto, by contrast, transports the listener to a “world far away.” Inspired by Baudelaire’s *The Flowers of Evil*, the music explores dark images, memories, and associations—not narrative program music, but a mysterious soundscape full of allusions and extreme expressiveness.

Hector Berlioz’s *Symphonie fantastique* also thrives on visions and borderline experiences: love, despair, intoxication, and madness merge into a musical nightmare. Only from this hellish labyrinth does the path lead to a moment of solace—carried by sacred sounds that burst forth from the orchestral frenzy.
