The evening invites you to get to know the vision and impact of the Land Art Biennale sā in the Indian Himalayas and to reflect together on art in dialogue with nature and community.
‘sā’, which means ‘soil’ in the Ladakhi language, is the highest contemporary Land Art Biennale in Asia – at an altitude of 3600 metres.
Founded on a deep connection to landscapes and the communities that live there, the Biennale takes place in remote Ladakh – one of the northernmost regions of the Indian Himalayas, near the Karakorum.
The Biennale invites young adults in particular to rethink the relationship between art and the environment. The aim is to promote an increased awareness of nature through artistic expression and to strengthen the exchange between local communities, artists and the audience.
For the second edition in June 2024, artists have been invited to submit contributions on the topic ‘The Future of Immersive Land Art / Immersive Land Art and the Future’. In addition to site-specific installations and sculptures, immersive audiovisual performances will also be presented for the first time.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Angelina Kumar, Friederike Schäfer and Paula Böke.
They will discuss the potentials and challenges of site-specific art, its embedding in the South Asian context, and the question of what new perspectives on land art this biennial opens up.
