Annette Schröter

Annette Schröter, born on 23 April 1956 in Meissen, is a German artist who is best known for her paintings and paper cut-outs.


After training as a porcelain painter from 1972 to 1976, she studied painting at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig from 1977 to 1982 in the class of Prof. Bernhard Heisig, where she received her diploma in 1982.

In 1985, she moved to Hamburg with photographer Erasmus Schröter (1956–2021). There, she was awarded the ‘Elysee Prize’ for painting in 1986. Between 1988 and 1990, she took on a teaching position in figurative drawing at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Department of Design, and in 1992, she was a visiting professor of painting at the Pentiment Summer Academy.

In 1997, she returned to Leipzig. From 1999 to 2001, she was a visiting professor of painting at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle and received the art prize at the 8th Leipzig Annual Exhibition in 2001. In the same year, she created her first paper cuts. In 2003, she took up another visiting professorship at ‘Pentiment’ in Hamburg, before working as a lecturer for the basic studies programme in painting/graphic arts at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 2004/05. In 2005, she finally turned to paper cutting as her preferred artistic medium. A year later, she worked as an artist in residence in Bern (Switzerland). From 2006 to 2022, she held a professorship in painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig.
