Flight and humanitarian interventionism in the Middle East, 1979-1991
Since the late 1970s, displacement has developed into a global political issue. With the war in Afghanistan, the Iran-Iraq war and the second Gulf War, the Middle East became the focus of political debates, humanitarian aid and human rights policy commitments.
Agnes Bresselau von Bressensdorf's study provides an insight into the daily work of aid organizations in the region's refugee camps, their networking with the Afghan and Kurdish diaspora in Germany and Western Europe and their significance for international politics. In this way, an overall panorama of flight and humanitarian aid in this region emerges, which continues to shape European and global refugee policy to this day.
The presentation of the book by Agnes Bresselau von Bressensdorf (Institute of Contemporary History Munich-Berlin) will be followed by a commentary by Heike Wieters (Humboldt University of Berlin). The subsequent panel discussion will be moderated by Hermann Wentker.
