Brooklyn Rider views the string quartet as a form of mini-democracy: a collaboration between equal voices, each with rights and responsibilities. Their programme Citizenship Notes brings this idea to life – starting with a quartet by Joseph Haydn, pioneer of the genre and master of balanced voice-leading.
Works by Matana Roberts, Gabriel Kahane, Bob Dylan, and Osvaldo Golijov explore burning questions for modern societies from various perspectives. In contrast, Philip Glass’s meditative string quartet is a deeply personal and touching requiem for his late friend, the painter Brian Buczak.
Brooklyn Rider:
- Johnny Gandelsman, violin
- Colin Jacobsen, violin
- Nicholas Cords, viola
