by Helge Schmidt and team
Over five million people in Germany live in poverty – and yet remain largely invisible in public discourse. In a society where many feel economically threatened, the meaning of actual poverty is lost: structural, existential, interpersonal.
This production doesn't speak about poverty – but rather from within it. It paints a multi-voiced and resistant picture of a marginalized group that no longer wants to remain silent:
Activists from the #IchBinArmutsbetroffen movement, in cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen, have written testimonials that speak of everyday life and isolation, but also of self-assertion and political awareness.
Director Helge Schmidt, who has received awards for his investigative theater work, stages the panopticon of voices, stories, tweets, and emotions woven into a dramatic text.
#ARMUTSBETROFFEN offers a platform for solidarity and engagement with a phenomenon that fulfills a cynical function in a wealthy society: Precarious poverty legitimizes and justifies excessive wealth.
