She was one of the few women accredited as a war correspondent in the 1940s and one of the new stars of journalism. Indeed, Lee Miller's reports, letters, and conversations from the hell known as the "Third Reich" remain, even in retrospect, among the most illuminating things ever written about Germany and its inhabitants.
Lee Miller, born in New York in 1907, was discovered as a model by Condé Nast at the age of 20. In Paris, she met Picasso and became Man Ray's student, lover, and model. In 1932, she separated from Man Ray and opened her own photography studio in New York. In 1942, she became accredited as a war correspondent for Vogue. From 1944 onward, she produced her famous reports and photographs about the war. In 1947, she married the art collector Roland Penrose and retired to the English countryside. She died of cancer in 1977.
