Intervention in the collection presentation

Muslim life has been part of European everyday cultures for centuries. But is this also reflected by the artefacts in MEK's collection? What are these objects? What do they tell us about the people who made and used them?

Some of the answers to these questions are addressed in the installation Muslim InVisibilities, an intervention in the permanent exhibition Cultural Contacts. Living in Europe. It looks at the relationships that are established by, with and to objects in Muslim everyday practices.

The objects are seen as connectors: they connect their users to God, to historical figures and contemporaries, and to places beyond everyday life. But not only that: The objects themselves are also connected. Some come from the same place or time. Others are made of similar materials or have similar functions and meanings.

All the objects in Muslim InVisibilities invite the visitor to engage with them. They may evoke memories, they may raise questions, they may simply bring joy to the viewer.
