A reconstruction of the framing
The Miraflores Altarpiece is one of the major works of Rogier van der Weyden, the most influential Dutch painter of the late Middle Ages. Until its acquisition by the Berlin Museums in 1850, its three panels still retained their original frames. Shortly thereafter, however, these presumably damaged frames were replaced with modern replicas.
Since then, the appearance of these frames has changed several times; since the 1980s, they have been completely gilded. Stephan Kemperdick, Curator of Early German and Early Netherlandish Painting, reports on the research into the original frames and their reconstruction.
