Since 2012, Christian Rothe has been designing and manufacturing new harpsichords, virginals, and spinets in his workshop in Prenzlauer Berg. In addition, he maintains, repairs, and provides concert support for historical keyboard instruments, which makes up a large part of his work.

Rothe talks about the intensive process that precedes the construction of a new instrument, the considerations involved in optimally meeting musical requirements, and the technical challenges associated with preserving old instruments.

In a 37-minute documentary film by Frédéric Batier, you will get to know Rothe's everyday life.
Batier, born in Paris, has lived in Berlin since 1997. He plays the piano and harpsichord himself, has worked as a camera assistant on film productions, and has been working as a set photographer since 2012. His passion lies equally in photography and the music of Bach and Scarlatti.
