In the summer of 1989, traumatized literature student Ed (Jonathan Berlin) flees his past to the Baltic Sea island of Hiddensee. He finds work at the excursion restaurant “Zum Klausner,” where he meets the charismatic Kruso (Albrecht Schuch).

Kruso has his own philosophy of freedom and takes care of the “castaways” – those who have come to the island because they’ve broken with the state or failed in society. As their utopia of freedom takes shape, the GDR begins to collapse around them, and Kruso’s world starts to crumble as well.

Based on the award-winning novel by Lutz Seiler, this film tells a moving story of friendship, loss, and the yearning for freedom. Feature film, 2018, Directed by Thomas Stuber, 100 min.
