Those who prefer to forgo interpretations of a warrior's life or autobiographical references to the composer during a performance of Richard Strauss's "Heldenleben" can instead concentrate entirely on the musical unfolding of the large Konzerthaus Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Søndergård – and this is certainly worthwhile given Strauss's masterful orchestration.
The focus of Brahms's only, highly virtuosic violin concerto is undoubtedly Veronika Eberle as soloist. The work premiered under the baton of the composer himself with Joseph Joachim on New Year's Day 1879 in the Leipzig
Gewandhaus.
The structure and degree of difficulty were hotly debated at the time – Hans von Bülow's famous accusation that it was more of a concerto "against the violin" is long outdated. It remains demanding, but at the same time a milestone in the repertoire.
