The transition from the Romantic to the Modern Age was not straightforward and took many different routes. The later radical newcomer Arnold Schoenberg began as Brahms’ successor, as his string composition »Verklärte Nacht« emphatically proves.
Antonín Dvořák was also influenced and inspired by Brahms, whose »Serenade for Wind Instruments« requires a mastery of techniques for different movements as well as a feeling for different timbres. Igor Stravinsky’s »Apollon musagète«, ballet music of transparent tonality and almost ethereal effect, is entirely shaped by the sound of strings.
